An appeals court has ruled in favor of disgraced stem-cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk, saying the punishment by Seoul National University was too severe.
Hwang was a professor and head researcher on stem-cell studies at Seoul National University, but was dismissed from his post in April 2006 after a research report his team published was found to contain falsified data.
But today, the Seoul High Court overturned an earlier decision and ordered the university's dismissal of Hwang to be revoked, saying that the data manipulation was done by a scientist outside of Hwang's direct supervision.
