N. Korea Will Use Nuclear Weapons As Final Card In Exchange For Normalization of Ties With US: WikileaksUpdated: 2011-10-06 00:00:00 KST
North Korea will keep its nuclear weapons until the final stages of the denuclearization negotiations when it will use that card in exchange for normalization of ties between Pyeongyang and Washington.
This is according to US cables leaked by whistle-blower site, Wikileaks.
The leaked cables reveal that North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister, Kim Kye-gwan, then-chief nuclear envoy for six party talks, told his South Korean counterpart in 2008 that Pyeongyang will hold onto its nuclear weapons card until the end of the multilateral nuclear disarmament talks and use it in exchange for the normalization of diplomatic ties with the United States.
The Wikileaks cables reveal that the remarks were made during a meeting between the top nuclear envoys of South and North Korea in Beijing three years ago.
