The latest reports from the waters off Somalia say smoke was seen coming from a container vessel that lost contact with its operator, Hanjin Shipping, early Thursday.
The Choi Young naval destroyer from Korea's anti-piracy Cheonghae unit has arrived at the site near the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden, where the 75-thousand ton Hanjin Tianjin was attacked by pirates. The ship remains afloat.
However, there have been no signs of either the ship's 20 crew members, including 14 Koreans, or the pirates.
The Panama-registered vessel is known to have sent out a distress call just before communication was cut off at 5:15 a.m., Korea time, while it was en route to Singapore from Spain.
