China: 6-Party Nuclear Talks Should Handle UEP
China's special envoy on issues related to Korea said on Saturday that the issue of Pyeongyang's uranium enrichment program, or UEP, should be dealt with at the six-party talks on the North's nuclear program.
Speaking to reporters at the National People's Congress, Wu Dawei said that while he hopes the six-party talks resume, he reiterated Beijing's position that there should be no preconditions to doing so.
Before the dialogue can resume, Seoul wants Pyongyang to accept responsibility for last year's deadly shelling of Yeonpyeong Island and the sinking of the warship Cheonan.
South Korea also wants to take the UEP issue to the UN Security Council, a position that the Obama administration in Washington said on Thursday it supports.
