Following a rising number of suicides among Korean celebrities a report showed that suicide is the third leading cause of death for women in Korea.
According to Statistics Korea around 19 out of every 100-thousand women in Korea killed themselves in 2008 making suicide the third largest cause of death following brain and heart diseases.
That is the highest figure among OECD member nations.
Experts say that stiff competition in schools, a worsening unemployment rate and the growing responsibilites of working moms are some of the main factors behind the high number of suicides.
The government plans to reduce the number of suicides by opening more rehabilitation and counseling centers throughout the nation.
