The 14th Anniversary of Arirang TV
Fourteen years have passed since the Korea International Broadcasting Foundation was established on April 10th, 1996.
One year after that Arirang TV officially launched domestic broadcast services and began expanding worldwide with the mandate of promoting a better understanding of Korea in the global community.
Arirang TV now reaches more than 82 million households in 188 countries and presents a wide range of information through various news, cultural, educational and entertainment programs.

"Over the past decade-and-a-half, I watched it grow, grow tremendously. Its coverage is now spanning the world. In terms of content, I think, it has improved quite significantly since the beginning. It's a very valuable window to Korea for non-Koreans both within Korea and outside of Korea."

Since 2008 the broadcaster has provided multilingual services in seven languages English, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Vietnamese and Malay-Indonesian.
It has also signed cooperation agreements with 53 broadcasters in 37 countries such as China's CCTV, Vietnam's VTV and Brazil's TV Cultura for joint production and the exchange of programs.
And starting last year, viewers in the US cities of Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta are able to watch Arirang on digital terrestrial broadcasting channels.

"And as the G20 summit is slated to take place in Seoul this coming November Arirang TV will be strengthening its role as a public service agency that promotes and improves Korea's image to domestic and overseas viewers."

The channel has expanded its news programming this year to provide more timely coverage of developing stories both on the Korean peninsula and around the world.
It is also creating programs specializing in multiculturalism to reflect the changing face of Korea and is also focusing on Korean food as it gains a greater following among international diners.

"We plan to expand our broadcasting infrastructure so that at least 100 million households can view the channel by 2013. And we will do our best to improve the quality of our programs and customize them for different regions and cultures."

What started off as a relatively modest project to get the word out on Korea has now grown into a full-fledged operation reaching virtually every corner of the world.
And with Korea's growing stature in the global society it looks like Arirang has its job cut out for itself.
