What is the first thing that people usually do when they boot their computers[Reporter : Jang Ji-yun
jiyun.jang@arirang.co.kr] "More than 250 marketers and PR professionals gathered here in Seoul today to discuss global social media trends and its evolution."
First, for those not familiar with "social media marketing" it describes the use of online communities, blogs or any other internet media for marketing, public relations and customer service.
These PR representatives have come together to examine digital trends and also people's prevelant use of social media.
According to experts one out of eight married couples in the US last year met through online networking sites and if Facebook were a country with its 300 million users it would be the world's 4th largest after China, India, the US and Indonesia.
Internet usage, whether it be for searching or interaction with friends, has become the norm for many making online social platforms a hot bed for marketing services and products.
[Interview : Steve Rubel, Senior Vice President
Edelman Digital ] "I don't care if it's books, movies, magazines, on-line contents will all be consumed digitally. And that means that tangible media, everything that you can see, touch, taste and smell is going to be in sharp decline or extinct within 5 years in the US. And so I think media companies are looking to transform."
But apparently social media marketing is not restricted to only big corporations and small to mid sized firms.
Take this case for instance.
A mother of twins in her 30s started a blog on cooking six years ago with the sole intention of sharing her cooking tips and making new friends who have similar interests over the Web.
But to her surprise the blog became a massive hit with tens of thousands of followers.
Since her launch, she has published five cook books and appeared in several television commericals.
[Interview : Moon Sung-sil, Popular blogger] "I've been writing my blog for six years now and I think my success comes from the fact that my blog is a place where anyone can come and share their thoughts and experiences. I also tried my best to listen to everyone's demands and provide as much content as possible."
Experts in the field of social media marketing say the next step is to go beyond promotional activities and improve product development by following digital trends and demands of netizens.
