Venerable Beopjeong Dies from Lung Cancer

The Venerable Beopjeong the nation's most respected and beloved Buddhist passed away on Thursday at Gilsang Temple a place of worship established by himself.
The Buddhist monk was recently hospitalized as his health worsened and eventually succumbed to lung cancer after a three-year battle
Venerable Beopjeong was one of the most prominent figures in Korean Buddhism and spent most of his life secluded in Songgwang Temple located in South Jeolla province.
But despite his seclusion he was able to communicate with the world by publishing a host of Buddhist books and essay collections which inspired the hearts of many including non-Buddhists.
His book titled "Without Possession" was his most popular and has been a steady seller since its publication in 1976.
Venerable Beopjeong also translated major Buddhist scribes along side other respectable monks in Korea.
He was also a social activist who led a civil organization that focused on human rights and environment protection.
People have already started gathering at Gilsang Temple to light incense and bid Venerable Beopjeong to rest in peace.
President Lee Myung-bak has also sent a message of condolence saying the Venerable has taught many meaningful lessons.
Following the late Buddhist's last requests there will be no burial ceremony but a cremation rite will be held on the 13th at Songgwang Temple.
