A fierce battle has begun in one of the world's most dynamic mobile phone markets with 45 million users out of a total population of 49 million.
Since the arrival of Apple's iPhone in November last year which has so far sold over 400-thousand units the smartphone market in Korea has been booming causing Korean mobile phone makers to go on the defensive.
The world's third largest cell phone maker LG Electronics unveiled its flagship smartphone with Google's Android operating system on Wednesday marking its latest addition as the first local handset with an open source mobile operating system.
The Andro-1 is the second of its kind in the local "smartphone heated" market after the US-made Motoroi from Motorola.
The company says its specific features such as a QWERTY keypad will allow users to surf the Web more freely and provide better access to its application store "Android Market".
Meanwhile the world's second largest handset maker Samsung Electronics said it plans to launch its first Google platform-based smartphone later this month firing up the competition in the already "stimulated" market.
The company says its first android phone will be equipped with more stable software and that it will later introduce its "Wave Model" based on its own unique operating system "Bada".
As Korea's two largest handset dominators enter the ring with their "android" models consumers can look forward to more opportunities to enjoy advanced IT technology at a more competitive price.
