Pres. Lee Says No to Politics on Sejong City Project
President Lee Myung-bak called the central region of Daejeon City and South Chungcheong Province the next central axis of science and technology in Korea.
Visiting the Chungcheong region for a policy briefing on Wednesday, the Korean leader listened to the region's plan for further growth.
Area representatives briefed the President on their plans to create more jobs and a business-friendly environment.
President Lee's visit drew a lot of attention from local media as it was his first visit to the region since his government announced its plan to scrap the initial Sejong City project citing the inefficiency of the plan earlier this year.
The project a brainchild of the previous Roh Moo-hyun administration originally aimed to relocate some government bodies to Chungcheong a region that has been historically marginalized in the government's development blueprints.
And the announcement brought about much political bickering with politicians mindful of voters in the region.
President Lee Myung-bak, however, said 'no' to applying politics to the matter.
Highlighting the assets the region possesses to become the next hub of science and technology for Korea, the leader said politics will do no good to the region's growth.

The Korean president asked the residents in Daejeon City and South Chungcheong Province to be understanding of his changes and called for joint efforts to further develop the region and the country.
