The best way to find the rarest of species is to go into the deepest locations around Mount Jiri.
As part of the Mount Jiri National Park the highest peak of Korea's third most prominent mountain reaches almost two thousand meters above sea level covering areas of the Jeolla Provinces and parts of South Gyeongsang Province.
And one wetland on the mountain the Wangdeongjae Wetland is attracting attention among local scholars for being home to animals and insects not found anywhere else in the country.
In the wetland half the size of a football field located 960 meters above sea level a wild pheasant finally welcomes its offspring after sitting on the egg for 25 days.
This Tiny Dragonfly is only coin-sized but is a rare insect on the brink of extinction.
Another small specimen requiring special attention is a rare shellfish 4 millimeters big only found in the mountains.
However scientist say some one billion years prior when oceans likely covered what is now Mount Jiri the shellfish lived in a seawater environment.
And this Russian Iris seen in bunches is a rare sight only found in this wetland.
There are a total of approximately four hundred different species that can be found in this patch of animal and insect paradise.
The untouched natural surroundings of the wetland are to be showcased at the upcoming 10th Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Changwong South Gyeongsang Province later next month.
