Mobile phone users can expect to see a new piece of information on their screens beginning as early as the second half of this year.
Korea's National Police Agency says calls placed from abroad will be identified with the words "international call" to help prevent a form of fraud called "vishing". Vishing comes from the words "voice" and "phishing" referring to attempts to trick people into giving up personal and financial information. Many vishing calls are placed from abroad but are made to sound as if they come from local police, prosecutors or the National Intelligence Service.
The international call identification would tell cell phone users that the calls are, in fact, not from local authorities.
