Talks to put the National Assembly back in order collapsed after lawmakers failed to narrow differences on a set of contentious bills.
Floor leaders of the main opposition Democratic Party and the ruling Grand National Party met for "make or break" negotiations Tuesday evening and ended up with "break". Opposition lawmakers have locked themselves inside the Assembly since last Friday to block the GNP from railroading through sensitive bills such as the free trade agreement with the United States and a disputed media bill.
To restore order the Assembly's speaker Kim Hyong-o has said he is willing to deploy security guards to eject the lawmakers from the legislature's main hall.
