Voting for today's by-elections came to a close just hours ago at 8 p.m.
A total of 290 polling stations in five constituencies were set up nationwide opening at 6 this morning.
According to the National Election Commision the turnout posted 39 percent the highest in nearly five years.
By region, Yangsan , South Gyeongsang Province had the highest turnout with 44 percent closely followed by Jeungpyeong in North Chungcheong Province with a 43 percent turnout.
Forty percent of the people in Gangneung , Gangwon Province voted in the elections, while Jangan , Gyeonggi Province saw a 36 percent turnout and Ansan , also in Gyeonggi Province, had 29 percent.
The preliminary election results should be out in about half an hour and is expected to give an idea of where public sentiment stands.
