The culture ministry appointed Wednesday Lee Cham to head the Korea Tourism Organization.
The 55-year-old TV celebrity of German descent who is now a Korean citizen hosted a program for a state-run channel here introducing Korean tourism and food.
The culture ministry explains the decision saying this reveals the government's resolve to open posts to others like him in its efforts to go global.
His term starts tomorrow and lasts for three years.
