The government is planning to increase its budget to 18 trillion won, or roughly 14 billion US dollars, for the four-river restoration project.
The ministry of land and transportation says that the budget was reported to the president last Tuesday during the strategy and finance ministerial meeting.
The project will restore the nation's four major river areas namely the Han, Nakdong, Yeongsan and Geum rivers to promote economic activity and develop the rivers as bases for green growth.
But an official from the ministry says the projected amount could be reduced after discussions with other departments.
