The ruling Grand National Party elected four-term lawmaker Ahn Sang-soo as its new floor leader on Thursday.
In a run-off election against Representative Hwang Woo-yea, Ahn came out as the winner with 95 votes out of a total 1-hundred-58 minus one abstention.
The outcome of the election garnered much attention as the candidates represent two factions within the party.
Ahn is a strong supporter of President Lee Myung-bak while his opponent Hwang who received 62 votes is a longtime ally to former GNP Chairwoman Park Geun-hye.
Meanwhile, Ahn's running mate Representative Kim Seong-jo was named the new head of the party policy committee.
