Lee Kang-rae has been elected as the new leader of the Democratic Party.
The lawmaker won 46 out of 75 votes in the race to become the opposition party's floor leader.
Lee faces the heavy task of managing legislation governing the media sector which has been a controversial issue among the political parties.
He will also be facing an internal disturbance caused by the former presidential candidate Chung Dong-young, who bolted from the Democratic Party to run in a by-election.
The newly-elected floor leader says he will bring the party relief by fighting against the ruling Grand National Party and promised to raise the party's approval rating to 25 percent by the end of this year.
