President Lee Myung-bak took a trip to highlight the link between the issue of balanced national development and his drive towards establishing a green economy.
Visiting the province of South Jeolla Friday President Lee sat down with the mayor of Gwangju and the provincial governor for briefings on their regional strategies.And the president checked on the progress of government plans for the region in line with his Green New Deal infrastructure projects and future industry development.
President Lee called for leaving behind the stereotype that Gwangju and the South Jeolla region are lagging in economic development, adding that the prospects are bright for the region's development.
Accompanied by local leaders the president visited construction sites for a leisure industry complex along the southwest coastline as well as the Yeongsan river area where an infrastructure project is underway to refurbish one the nation's four major waterways.
President Lee also made a stop at the Korea Photonics Technology Institute, which is in the process of developing more energy-efficient lighting devices, a field the Lee administration selected as one of 17 growth engines for the green economy. During his visit, President Lee also pledged that he will not give any political considerations in supporting the region mostly dominated by opposition lawmakers.
An independent lawmaker Lee Yoonsuk from the Muan-Shinan district in South Jeolla Province told Arirang News that local residents welcome the government's belated response to clean up the Yeongsan River which as of now is not even suitable as a source of water for industrial use.
