N. Korea's Kaesong likely to be listed as UNESCO world heritage
This file photo shows the Sungyang Seowon or Confucian Academy in North Korea's border city of Kaesong. The elite school and other historic sites in Kaesong are almost certain to be added to the UNESCO world heritage list as they have recently been recommended by a UNESCO advisory panel. UNESCO's World Heritage Committee will convene a meeting in Phnom Penh June 16-27 to decide on the panel's recommendation. The seowon is one of several major cultural heritages in the medieval capital city of Korea during Goryeo Dynasty, which ruled the Korean Peninsula from 918 until 1392 when it was replaced by Joseon Dynasty. Kaesong has fortress walls, ruins of the palace, old buildings and Namdaemun or South Gate to the Royal Palace and royal tombs, including that of King Gongmin, who fought fiercely to regain Goryeo's independence from Mongolian rule.
